In a knock down, drag out fight on the floor of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium Tuesday night, the Managaha Chiefs (7-2) handed the first place Lost Boyz (10-1) their first loss of the 2005 season of the Island Wide Volleyball League in three spirited sets that went down to the wire.

The Chiefs’ Lucky and Larry Sharry proved to be too much for the Lost Boyz, as the tandem combined for five kills in the two sets they won, while teammates Dimas Omar Apple Samson, and Andrew Ortega slammed volleyballs to the ground as well.

Jazz Roscoe also laid down three kills in the final two sets for the Chiefs, but it was all-around team play and communication that allowed them to sully dreams of a perfect season by the Lost Boyz.

The Lost Boyz continued their regular season streak by winning the first set with the Chiefs, 25-20, but quickly found themselves on the losing end of the stick when the men of Managaha turned the tables with a 25-16 second set.

In the deciding set of the match, the Chiefs were able to withstand three kills from the high-flying Freddy Pelisamen and a pair from the “Thai Bomber” Kitinan Intharaluk, to emerge with a 16-14 win.

Joe Mettao of the Lost Boyz didn’t admit to feeling bad after the match, but smiled as he said “They don’t know my strategy.” His team is still alone on first place, but the Chiefs share second place with No Fear (7-2).

The rough and tumble No Fear squad also picked up a win for their schedule on Tuesday night, but it was hand delivered rather than hard fought, as the Monarchs (0-10) had to forfeit the game because of a lack of punctual players.

There were no such problems in the women’s league, as all of the top four teams showed up for a playoff preview on the South court of the Oleai facility for the final round of games in their regular season.

The duel for second place between the She Devils (9-2) and the Dragons (7-2) ended with the 15-5 third set clincher that gave the She Devils a little breathing room in the number two spot.

After winning the first set 25-23, the She Devils dropped the second 25-20 to a Dragons squad on the rebound. Aleta Glaze and company ran out of gas in the third, as Frances Somorang and the She Devils served their way to a happy 15-5 ending.

These teams may find themselves playing each other soon, as the top four teams will advance to the post season. The top team in the league continued to prove why they reign supreme, as Pikan Gaga (10-1) spanked Bootylicious (5-7) in three sets.

The opening round of action finished with Bootylicious on the winning side of a 25-20 decision, but the Gaga girls gave them a taste of their own medicine in the second set when they rallied to tie the match at a set apiece, 25-19.

Percy Torres, Connie and Bego Camacho teamed up to topple the fourth-place team 15-5 in the clincher.
