The Attorney General’s Office yesterday lodged 15 criminal charges against a 58-year-old man whom police had accused of sadistic physical and sexual abuse of his wife, threatening to rape the woman’s two kids and to kill several persons, including Superior Court judge Kenneth Govendo.

The charges against Juan DeLeon Guerrero Manalo include two counts of assault and battery; three counts each of criminal contempt of court, violating an order of protection, and disturbing the peace; and a count each of assault, assault with a dangerous weapon, and stalking in the first and second degrees.

Assistant attorney general Jeffrey Warfield filed with the Superior Court a criminal information containing those charges against Manalo.

Warfield accused Manalo of threatening to kill his wife last Dec. 23, choking the woman in the presence of their underaged son. The prosecutor said Manalo used a machete in assaulting the woman on that date, despite a standing court order compelling the defendant not to harm her.

Warfield said Manalo again beat the woman up last Jan. 27 in the presence of their underaged son. Police earlier said the boy was just two years old. The following day, Manalo repeatedly appeared at the woman’s workplace, according to the prosecutor.

Earlier, the woman testified during Manalo’s bail hearing in court that he poked her eyes at one time and threatened to pluck them out.

The charges, however, did not include those pertaining to the man’s alleged sadistic sexual abuse of the woman.

Superior Court presiding judge Robert Naraja had imposed a $100,000 bail for Manalo’s temporary release and directed the defendant to stay at least 100 yards away from the woman’s places of work and the schools where the daughters are studying should he manage to post the bond.
