MPLA board redistributes panel chairs
The Marianas Public Lands Authority board of directors has redistributed the chairmanship of committees among its members.
MPLA chair Ana Demapan-Castro reinstated vice chair Manny P. Villagomez yesterday as head of the Land Compensation Committee. Villagomez, who originally chaired the panel, replaces board member Nicolas Nekai, who was temporarily named to the post during the vice chair’s absence.
At the same time, Demapan-Castro appointed board member Felix Sasamoto to assume the chairmanship of the Operations Committee, previously held by Villagomez.
Nekai will continue to head the Personnel and the Research and Development Committees, while Manglona will remain the chair of the Finance Committee.
In an interview, Demapan-Castro said the revamp was done in an effort to spread out responsibilities among the board members.
“Being the chair of three committees is too big a responsibility to place on board member Nekai. It’s taking a lot of his time, so we decided to give some of his tasks to the other members. Now all the board members have responsibility,” she said. “Everything is really running smoothly now.”
Nekai is also in charge of the task force created to study Pagan pozzolan.
The MPLA board of directors went through a period of infighting last year due to disagreements over Demapan-Castro’s termination of former MPLA commissioner Henry Hofschneider, among other things.
But the board later settled their differences, with all the members confirming Demapan-Castro’s power to hire and fire MPLA personnel, as well as her appointment of Hofschneider’s replacement, Edward Deleon Guerrero.
