A Mexican naval officer was found dead yesterday aboard ARM Zapoteco, a Mexican Navy ship visiting Naval Base Guam.

The officer’s body was examined by the ship’s medical officer, who determined the time of death to be early Sunday morning.

The body was transported by ambulance to the morgue at Naval Hospital Guam to await autopsy by the Guam medical examiner today. Mexican officials will observe the autopsy and repatriate the remains.

ARM Zapoteco and ARM Usumacinta are on Guam for three days while taking on fuel and supplies. The ships are transiting the Pacific Ocean from their homeports in Manzanillo, Mexico, to provide humanitarian aid to areas of Indonesia devastated by the recent tsunami.

The Zapoteco is a logistics ship, 250 feet long with 165 onboard. The Usumacinta was once the USS Frederick, a transport/docking ship with a length of about 560 feet and a crew of 384.

The two-ship task group is commanded by Adm. Daniel Flores-Bello. The ships are transporting food, clothing, portable water-makers and electrical equipment to restore power. They are also transporting several trucks and helicopters and 43 medical personnel.

This is the Mexican Navy’s first visit to Guam since 1997. (PR)
