Marianas High School could not have been more proud of its 12 high school students, all members of the Chamorro Club, after they brought home the bacon from the Chamorro Language Competition held on Guam last March 8.

University of Guam played host to this competition, which was participated in by four high schools on Guam, Rota and Saipan.

MHS won first place in three categories: Dance, Oratorical and Speech, and Poetry. They bagged second place in dramatic interpretation or skit and proficiency, that includes tests in writing, speaking and reading.

Joshua Aguon, president of Chamorro Club, said this is the first time that Saipan participated in this annually held event. Last year’s major winners came from Rota High School.

“Next year we’re coming back to sweep it,” said Aguon, promising to getting the top prize for all categories.

Proud participants to this competition were Victor Ada, Roland Tudela, Joshua Aguon, Jadine Tudela, Jerimay Tudela, Brian Salas, Nicole Deleon Guerrero, Josephine Agulto, Kayla Deleon Guerrero, Emily Repeki, Naomi Sablan, and Kimberly Indalecio.

MHS teachers Lume Bermudez and Alex Lorzano accompanied the students to Guam.

All categories from Poetry to Skit to Speech were all conducted in Chamorro. Jadine Tudela, vice president of the Chamorro Club, said that they are very happy to have won the contest and on behalf of all the Chamorros in her school, they truly share the honor. The winners received medals and plaques as their prize.
