As the adults of the Northern Mariana Islands Triathlon Federation have been busy gearing up for the 2005 XTERRA Saipan Championship and the 16th Annual Tagaman Triathlon, so too have the children for the Kids TRYathlon series, and the youngsters will get to show their stuff in the “Rumble on the Road” less than two weeks from now.

The NMITF and the Saipan Swim Club have teamed up again to offer the next generation of athletes a head start to living a healthy lifestyle by hosting an abbreviated distance multi-sport event in preparation for the “Tagakids All Islanders Championship” in April.

The youngsters will be divided into age groups and take to the water of the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool in Marpi next Saturday, March 26, at 7am to get the race underway. From there, the mini multi-sport enthusiasts will proceed to the road course for the bike portion followed by the run.

The tiniest triathletes of the 5-and-under Trikes and Training Wheels division will negotiate a 25-meter swim (floatation devices are permitted), 1-kilometer bike course, and 500m run. Entrants between the ages of 6-9 years of age will challenge the 100m swim, 5km bike, and 1km run, while those in the 10-12 age group will double up for the 200m swim, 10km bike, and 2km run course. The oldest competitors falling into the 13-15 age group take the distances one step further with a 400m swim, 15km bike, and 3km run.

Registration for the “Rumble on the Road” begins at 6:30am, at the Marpi pool, and the cost to participate is $5 per child.

As has been the case with all of the NMITF events, teams are welcome in all age groups. This time out they will even open the competition to children wishing to participate in only one event, as well.

Children under nine years of age will have the added bonus of an Easter egg hunt following the day’s activities, and there will even be a special prize raffle for those who bring a friend to participate in the 10-15 year-old age group.
