Employer ordered to pay for labor fees from 3 years ago
The Department of Labor fined an employer over $2,000 for failing to provide proof of payment of labor fees for nine workers three years ago.
Labor hearing officer Cinta Kaipat ordered Mirage Saipan Co. Ltd. to pay a contract filing fee of $225 for each of the nine workers before May 2.
Records show that the applications for the nine employees were originally denied because the employer failed to provide proof that it paid for the 2002-2003 renewals.
Kaipat related that at the hearing, Mirage employee Tony Sablan testified that their former personnel manager mismanaged the handling of documents for the company. Such misconduct reportedly created a chaotic situation for Sablan, who is the current personnel manager and the staff who are trying to straighten things out with the Labor Department’s assistance.
“The hearing established that the company did employ the…nine nonresident workers during the contract year 2002-2003. The company should pay to the CNMI Treasury the sum of $2,025, which would have been the contract filing fee of $225 x 9 had the company filed the applications properly,” Kaipat said.
Only six of the nine workers remain on island and have pending employment applications with Labor, she noted.
Kaipat instructed the employer to update the employees’ health certificates and police clearance. “Once these deficiencies have been complied with, then the Department should continue with the processing of the applications,” she said.
