Prius, G-Rollers win in 25-and-under
Toyota Prius and Garapan Rollers each won their second straight game Friday night as action in the BANMI 25-and-under Basketball League continued at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
In the curtain raiser, guard Dan Barcinas led four Prius players in double figures with 22 points as Toyota downed the San Antonio Wildcats, 80-62.
The Wildcats kept it close in the opening quarter behind pesky point guard Tyler Yu, who went off for eight of his team-high 12 points as San Antonio ended the period down only by four points, 18-22.
The second stanza, however, belonged to the Prius cagers, who outscored their opponents, 26-16, for a 48-34 lead at halftime.
Both teams matched each other well in the third quarter before Prius widened their lead in the fourth to notch their sixth win in seven games.
Jeremy Winkfield and Ambrose Ogumoro also had solid outings for Toyota, pumping in 17 and 12 points
Preston Basa tried to spearhead a comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring all of his 11 points, while Henry Saban and Joe Kapileo each finish with 10 points for the Wildcats.
In the second game, the G-Rollers followed their upset win over Ulloa by holding off a late rally by the Ghasias 7-Kings for a 101-94 victory.
Sharpshooter Brian Flores was on fire, leading the team to a 32-10 run in the first quarter. The former San Antonio cager swooshed the net for 12 points, all from behind the arc to lead the G-Rollers.
The G-Rollers saw their lead dwindle as scoring machine Fred Pelisamen, B.J. Kaipat, and Ben Pelisamen made a comeback at the start of the second period. Ghasias outscored the G-Rollers, 24-17, to cut the deficit to 15 points at the break, 34-49.
The 7-Kings continued to lean on their terrible trio, but fortunately for the G-crew, Flores continued to hit from the outside, forward Derrick Tudela had his sweet touch, and their strong balanced attack got them over the hill.
Flores finished with a team-high 24 points on eight bombs from downtown, while Tudela and Kelvin Fitial had 20 and 10 points.
Fred Pelisamen scored a game-high 30 points, while Kaipat and Ben Pelisamen added 28 and 22 points.
With the win, coach Joe Diaz and his G-Rollers leveled their win-loss card at 3-3.
