A shorthanded Matansa Sparks scored another victory Monday night, slipping past the Tanapag Young Warriors, 43-42, in a down-the-wire finish in the ongoing Island-wide Village Basketball League at the As Matuis Basketball Court.

The two teams were neck and neck the entire game, with neither willing to let the other pull away.

Knotted at eight points apiece after the first eight minutes of play, the Sparks managed to grab a slim 13-12 lead after the first half.

Matansa padded their lead in the third quarter, lighting the scoreboard for 16 points courtesy of a combined 10-point push by Greg Camacho and Vince Iglecias.

The Young Warriors, however, were not to be outdone as Ike Aldan worked for 10 points to keep his team in striking distance, 26-29, with only one period left in regulation.

Gerome Mira and Aldan continued to fuel Tanapag’s charge, but the duo of Juan Ogarto and Iglecias proved to be up to task as the Sparks barely held on for the nail-biting win.

The Young Warriors had a shot at pulling ahead in the dying seconds, however, the Sparks defense rushed to the rescue, holding the Warriors from getting a shot off just before time expired.

Ogarto led the Sparks with 16 points, while Iglecias and Camacho finished with 14 and 11 points.

Aldan led all scorers with 20 points, while Mira was good for 12 points to lead the Young Warriors. Tanapag also had a solid outing from cagebelle Agatha Repeki, who had six points.

Meanwhile, IVYBL officials postponed last night’s game between the defending champions Garapan Rollers and Kagman due to Mother Nature’s wet weather.

Weather permitting action will resume tonight at 6:30pm with the league-leading San Antonio 69ers taking on Hopwood Junior High School.

Sparks 43—Ogarto 16, Iglecias 14, Camacho 11, Igitol 2.

Young Warriors 42—Aldan 20, Mira 12, Repeki 6, Castro 2, Pangelinan 2.

Scoring by quarters: 8-8, 13-12, 29-26, 43-42.

Referees: Jovie Omar and Jonathan Tenorio.
