The Governor’s Water Task Force and the U.S. Geological Survey have identified 19 new well sites and are now in the process of acquiring necessary permits from various government agencies to begin exploratory drillings.

Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente, who heads the panel, said seven of the new well sites are in Kagman, two are on Capitol Hill, and 10 are in As Lito.

“We are in the process of getting permits from the Division of Fish and Wildlife, the Historic Preservation Office and the Division of Environmental Quality,” said Benavente.

He said crews would immediately conduct exploratory drillings once all permits have been issued.

The task force has also hired an engineering firm to survey and develop a scope of work and provide cost estimates to repair and refurbish a reservoir on Capitol Hill.

The reservoir, which was built in the 1970s, has a 1-million gallon capacity and provides water to Capitol Hill, Wireless Hill, I Denni, As Teo, Agag, and all the way to the Kagman intersection.

Benavente said problems about the leak had been noted way before the task force was created in 2003.

“The reservoir needs to be emptied, cleaned and investigated,” he said.

The leaking reservoir is located along Tapochao Road.

The WTF has set an aggressive drilling and well construction schedule that initially includes 100 exploratory wells. The task force hopes to put two million gallons a day of additional good quality water into the utility water system before the end of 2005. (PR)
