Environmental Expo a smashing success
Over 250 elementary and junior high school students turned out for this year’s Environmental Expo kick-off on April 19. The event, held at the Chamolinian Cultural Village, included exhibits by numerous public and private organizations.
Upon their arrival, students were handed Expo “Passports” to take with them to the different booths. There were booths on virtually every subject related to the environment, including nonpoint source pollution, coral reefs, recycling, agriculture, nutrition, toxic waste, brown tree snakes, wildlife protection, forestry, energy conservation, and water quality.
After proving that they had learned something about each booth that they visited, students received a stamp in their passport. Twenty stamps made them eligible for fabulous giveaways, including cool temporary tattoos, recycled denim pencils, posters and calendars printed on recycled paper with soy-based ink, and a “Citizens for a Clean Environment” notepad that they could use to report environmental violations.
In addition to fun booths and giveaways, there were quite a few games, including the Exponanza Gameshow, the DCCA-Reach Raffle, and the DPH Diabetes Prevention Program’s Move It Obstacle Course. Lots of great prizes were given away, including tote bags, t-shirts, energy-efficient light bulbs, and umbrellas. All in all, the Expo kick-off was declared a smashing success.
Don’t miss the second and final Expo event on April 21, 6pm-9pm, at the Garapan Street Market! There will once again be a great variety of interactive and educational exhibits and terrific giveaways, in addition to the usual mix of delicious food and great musical entertainment that everyone knows and loves at every Street Market.
Then, at 7pm, there will be an Environmental Recognition Award Ceremony to recognize all the Environmental Awareness Week contest winners, as well as organizations and individuals who have made significant contributions to environmental protection in the CNMI. Hope to see you there!
