In celebration of the Vietnam Veterans Recognition Week on May 1-7, 2005, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 3457 on Saipan is inviting all high schools, 9th to 12th grades, to join an essay contest.

The theme of the essay shall be called “ A War Not Forgotten.” It must be at least three pages long, a minimum of five paragraphs, typed or neatly printed and double-spaced. The essay must contain three major involvement of the United States in the Vietnam War: American Complete Intervention; the TET Offensive; and Vietnamization and Withdrawal.

It also must include names of U.S. presidents involved, important dates, places and statistics.

The essay can be mailed to VFW Post No. 3457, PMB 529, P.O. Box 10000 CK, Saipan or hand delivered to the VFW Post Canteen in Beach Road, Garapan, the former Hotel California.

Essays will not be accepted after 3pm, Thursday, May 5, 2005.

The Post will award $200 for the best essay, 1st place; $150 for 2nd place, and $100 for 3rd place.

The essay must be done individually and fully endorsed by a school representative—either a teacher or principal.

Winners will be announced on Friday, May 6.

Community service coordinator Larry Guerrero said the purpose of this event is to show a united patriotic front, rekindle patriotism, and remember the men and women serving our country. It is just one of the hundred events the VFW, throughout the nation, will be hosting, in celebration of the Vietnam Veterans Recognition Week.

For additional information, contact Guerrero at 256-1052, Mariano Fajardo at 233-4865 or Matias Chargualaf at 287-7038. (PR)
