House Speaker Benigno R. Fitial yesterday joined his colleagues in conferring a plaque of recognition and appreciation to historian Sam McPhetres, a senior instructor at the Northern Marianas College.

The plaque presented to McPhetres acknowledges the teacher’s significant contributions in the field of education, including the publication of history textbooks and scholarly articles, as well as the collection and preservation of many NMI documents of historical value.

In the House resolution he sponsored, Fitial noted McPhetres’ community contributions as a teacher, author, Peace Corps volunteer, archivist, Trust Territory program developer, and historian.

“Sam has closely observed and documented important political and historical developments in the NMI for the past 30 years,” said Fitial.

“He is very knowledgeable and deserves special recognition for the positive influence he has had on many NMC students,” the Speaker added.

In receiving the recognition, McPhetres accepted the House resolution on behalf of his students at the Northern Marianas College.
