69ers continue to brush away opponents
The San Antonio 69ers kept their undefeated season alive and remained perfect in the ongoing Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League, routing Hopwood Junior High School, 76-24, Wednesday night at the Koblerville Basketball Court.
The 69ers were as dominant as ever, and after letting HJHS match up for an 8-8 finish at the end of the first quarter, coach Ray Duenas’ squad put their game faces on, shifted to higher gear, and began to blow the game wide open.
Duenas’ normal starting cast immediately took control of the match, forcing many turnovers and converting on fastbreak opportunities en route to outscoring their opponents, 30-2, in the second eight-minute stanza for a commanding 38-10 lead at halftime.
The team slowed down a bit as Duenas reinserted his reserves in the third period, which still managed to score a field goal better than the opposition to pad their lead to 30 points, 48-18.
It was cruise control from there on as the 69ers got back to their scoring spree in the fourth quarter, burning the net for another 28 points while limiting HJHS to just three field goals to cap the easy 52-point win.
Bill Babauta led a balanced scoring attack, which featured 11 different 69ers putting the ball through the hoop, with a game-high 20 points, while Ernest Duenas, Mart Pangelinan, and Alex King each pumped in eight points in solid support.
Max Muna led HJHS with eight points, while Isaiah Wabol and Ton Aldan contributed six points apiece in a losing cause.
