NMC president to speak on state of college
The CNMI community will have to chance to learn about the programs, accomplishments, and current situation of the Northern Marianas College, as NMC president delivers the state of the college address on Wednesday.
The address will cover Deleon Guerrero’s first year as college president: initially as the acting president after the resignation of Dr. Kenneth Wright in February 2004 and then as president following his appointment by the NMC Board of Regents in July 2004.
The speech will start at 10am and will be held in the Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center.
Designed to inform community members about the status of the college and its programs, the state of the college address will coincide with the college fair, which will feature the various course offerings and activities at NMC.
“We welcome all interested individuals to attend this presentation and we want our CNMI community to learn more about our NMC programs and services. President Deleon Guerrero and the college faculty and staff, with our friends in the administration, Legislature, and community, have successfully addressed some serious concerns, while moving the college forward in its continuing quest to provide quality higher education to the people of the Commonwealth,” said NMC chair Kimberlyn King-Hinds.
NMC faced various challenges over the past year, mostly in relation to its purchase of the La Fiesta shopping complex.
The college suffered significant operating losses and low staff morale until La Fiesta was transferred to the CNMI Executive Branch early this year. The accreditation of its baccalaureate and vocational programs was also on warning status until recently.
Established as a teacher training institute in 1981, NMC is now a federally accredited community college offering a wide range of degrees and certificates. These include a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, 15 associate degrees, and numerous certificated programs.
Aside from the academic programs, NMC also provides a variety of continuing education and short-term training programs. (Agnes E. Donato)
