The House of Representatives has adopted two resolutions calling on President Bush to appoint a separate U.S. Attorney and U.S. Marshal for the CNMI.

The House, during a session Thursday, unanimously approved House Resolution 14-119 for the CNMI’s U.S. Marshall and H.R. 14-120 for the CNMI’s U.S. Attorney.

Authored both by Rep. Clyde Norita, the resolutions argued that, as a separate territory, the CNMI deserves to have the two posts.

Right now, the CNMI maintains both offices but it lacks resident officials.

“As it stands, the U.S. attorney and U.S. Marshal for CNMI is Guam. These offices report directly to Guam,” Norita said.

The resolutions request the U.S. Department of Justice and other relevant federal entities to recommend those two federal officials for the CNMI.

The lawmaker cited that the CNMI had been allowed to have its own U.S. District Court in the CNMI.

“We used to share a district court with Guam. We have our own district court now. Why don’t we have our U.S. Attorney and U.S. Marshal?” he asked.
