Local bikers prep for big race
The road to the year’s main motocross event is smoothing up for bikers from the Commonwealth, and with the Marianas Racing Association continuing its push on hosting monthly races to serve as tune ups, local riders are expected to be ready for the action-packed international race next month.
“Riders are getting more into their speed of line preparing for the international race on July,” said MRA president Eric Cruz during an interview yesterday after MRA’s monthly points race at the Cowtown Raceway Park in Marpi. [Yesterday] is the fourth points race of the year and it turned out really positive.”
The monthly points race enables each biker to compete in his or her class in hopes of earning the most points at the end of the year. Whoever sits on top of the points mountain will be recognized as the No. 1 rider in the respective class.
Meanwhile, Cruz said much is still needed to do before the international race, including touch ups on the racetrack.
“The track is pretty much prepared but we’re expecting more modification before the big race,” he said.
The international race will feature top guns from the Commonwealth putting their skills to the test against riders from New Zealand, Guam, Philippines, and Japan, among other countries.
“We have more interested riders coming to join us,” Cruz said. “This time, the Philippines is coming in with about seven groups. I guess they like the hospitality of the island.”
“Our riders in the CNMI, we’re pretty confident in holding some positions in each CC class. Take the 125cc, for example, we have potential riders. We’re going to be competitive. We’ll see the competitiveness of every rider from every country,” Cruz added.
According to Cruz, the local Motocross scene is booming and continues to grow.
“New riders and kids are being brought in to be trained,” Cruz said.
Another points race will be held on June 26, and will also serve as a tune up for the big show.
