The Marianas Visitors Authority is optimistic that it will find solutions to the expected impact of Japan Airlines’ looming pullout at the Tokyo tourism summit next week.

MVA managing director Vicky I. Benavente assured the board of directors yesterday that the summit, to be led by MVA, would yield positive suggestions from tourism industry players in Japan.

Some 40 representatives of Japan-based airlines, tour agencies, and other tourism-related businesses are expected to participate in the meeting, to be held on June 17.

At the summit, MVA will pitch the destination and present various incentive programs to be offered to airlines and tour agents bringing tourists to the islands.

For the CNMI’s part, Gov. Juan N. Babauta will reportedly lead a 15-member delegation to follow up on last week’s meeting with Japan Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Continental, and U.S. and Japan government officials promoting air service to the Northern Marianas.

Aside from Babauta and some MVA officials, the CNMI delegation will include Senate President Joaquin Adriano, representative Joseph Deleon Guerrero and Arnold Palacios, Commonwealth Ports Authority chair Jose Lifoifoi, CPA board member Benigno Fejeran, and CPA executive director Carlos Salas.
