Libweiirs!! caught a scare from one of the teams hailing from the southern portion of the standings on Thursday night at the Pacific Islands Club, as they narrowly defeated Yacchatta!! in one of the longest games of the 6th Annual Coors Light Four-Person Beach Volleyball League season.

After cruising to a relatively easy 11-6 win in the first set, Libweiirs!! got a taste of their own medicine when Yacchatta!! turned the tables in the battle of teams with exclamation marks in their monikers by evening the set count at one apiece with a hard fought 11-6 win.

With new life and a little momentum, Yacchatta!! seemed poised to pull of an upset as they amassed a 9-4 lead, but Libweiirs!! tightened up their defense and started to get into a rhythm to tie the game at 11-all.

The longest set in recent memory featured perfect passes and dynamite digs as each team selflessly sacrificed their bodies. Jazz Rosokow, Berny Neth, Larry Serry, and Angie Mister managed to take a 12-11 lead before finishing the game 13-11.

The win put Libweiirs!! into a first place tie with the L.L. Sleese Staks at 8-1, and their next games are extremely important as each team has only on remaining. Without a playoff round, the team who finishes first takes the top prize.

While the first place duo is looking ahead, the Beach Side Rockers were focused solely on staying within striking distance of the juggernauts, and they did so by improving their record to 7-2 by defeating the Small Hustlers.

The return of Bruce Berline to the sand courts was certainly a boost to the Rockers as they rocketed out to take the first set 11-4. Rather than throwing in the towel, the Small Hustlers dealt the Rockers an 11-6 hand to even the set count at one apiece.

Though Benny Mettao and her band of crafty Lilliputians fought valiantly, they were unable to stop the rock as the Beach Side Rockers scored an 11-6 win in the clincher.

All that remains for the Rockers is a match with Dale Roberts and his silent but deadly Air Biscuits next Tuesday, June 14, but they are on a roll as well.

The Air Biscuits picked up their sixth win by sweeping Monkeys and Bananas in straight sets, 11-3, 11-4, and 11-1 before the sun went down to open up the night’s activities, and kept their dream of a spot in the top three alive and well.

Roberts worked with Evan “the Eagle” Hunsberger and Paul “the Wall” Gauci to peel the Bananas without working up a sweat to rebound nicely from Tuesday’s loss to the first-place Sleese Staks. Aside from having to win out their remaining games against the Beach Side Rockers and Yacchatta!!, the Air Biscuits have to cross their fingers for a loss by Libweiirs!! and the L.L. Sleese Staks to slide into first.

First place is not even remotely on the minds of the Ganbarimasho squad, but the underachievers notched their second win in a row by handing the Crashers a pair of 11-3 sets to win their ninth set of the season in their final game.

At 2-8, Ganbarimasho was hoping to finish with a better place in the standings, but the occupiers of the 10th spot ended the season with a bang by upsetting the 3-6 Crashers.
