Much to show in local sports
Many had their fair share of the spotlight the past week, but stealing the show are the CNMI Masters II competing in the Pacific Islanders Masters Tournament on Guam.
The NMI squad had shining moments, but none better than a bases-clearing grand slam by veteran Tony Rogolifoi against Australia, leading CNMI past the team from the Land Down Under 23-3. The team won their first three games of the tournament.
Meanwhile, action in the BANMI 25-and-under Basketball League is heating up and the league is now down to just three teams heading to the final week of competition. The San Antonio Wildcats, SaipanCell-NMC Hoopaholics, and Garapan Rollers were eliminated from further action, while Ulloa’s, Ghasias 7-Kings, and Toyota Prius still have title hopes. Prius is awaiting an opponent in the championship game, while Ulloa’s and the 7-Kings battle tomorrow for the final title game ticket.
High flyers also made their presence felt, taking their machines to the extreme Sunday in the fourth points race of the year hosted by the Marianas Racing Association. MRA will hold another race on June 26 in preparation for the much-anticipated international competition next month.
Also, the Northern Yankees maintained sole possession of first place in the Saipan Major League after beating fellow powerhouse Ford Rangers in convincing fashion, 10-3, Monday night at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.
The Saipan Little League also announced this year’s team that will represent Saipan in the Rota Little League District Tournament this month.
Action also continues in the 6th Annual Coors Light Four-Person Beach Volleyball League at the Pacific Islands Club, and the final four stage for the Mobil Oil Mariana Islands Co-ed Basketball League is set.
