In hopes of enforcing sportsmanship, the Basketball Association of the Northern Mariana Islands has suspended two players for their unsportsman-like conduct during the playoffs of the BANMI 25-and-under Basketball League last week.

Letters furnished by BANMI yesterday showed that Ghasias 7-Kings forward Freddie Pelisamen was to be suspended immediately.

BANMI 25-and-under league commissioner Elias Rangamar also said that San Antonio Wildcats forward Henry Sablan was also to be suspended immediately for unsportsman-like conduct as well; however, he did specify the time period of the suspension.

According to the letter, the association decided to suspend Pelisamen from further action in all BANMI-sanctioned basketball competitions for a period of one year.

The letter confirmed that the suspension was “as a consequence of your unsportsman-like conduct” during and after last Monday night’s playoff game against Toyota Prius.

“The BANMI board regrets that it is necessary to take this action,” BANMI president Miguel R. Muna and BANMI secretary Michael A. White said in the letter. “However, the conduct in which you engaged, including but not limited to the use of racial epithets against another player, will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”

The board also noted that Pelisamen had been suspended twice in the past.

The issue on Pelisamen’s suspension was among the topics discussed during last Thursday’s BANMI meeting.

A copy of Sablan’s letter was not available. However, Rangamar said the San Antonio forward is being suspended for attempting to instigate a fight.

The 7-Kings were scheduled to battle Ulloa’s in a crucial playoff bout last night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, with the winner advancing to play Prius in the championship game tomorrow and the loser settling for second-runner up.

Results of the Ulloa’s-Ghasias bout was not available as of press time.
