Jones, Camacho dominating SML pitching
Northern Yankees hurler Jonathan Jones and Jonathan Camacho of the Miller Lite Brewers are still in control of the Saipan Major League pitching competition, with Jones sporting the best earned run average and Camacho ahead of the pack in the strikeout department as of June 10.
Jones is one big reason why the Yankees are on top of the SML standings and, according to statistics provided by the SML, has seen action in seven games and allowed just two earned runs while on the mound for a league-leading 0.77 ERA. Jones faced batters in 23 innings and gave up just 13 hits and is third in the league with 33 strikeouts.
Right behind Jones in the ERA race is Bud Kings hurler Ray Dela Cruz, who pitched in 30 innings of four games and allowed just five earned runs for a respectable 1.52 ERA. Dela Cruz also sports a 1-1 win-loss card.
For his part, Roy Celis of the third place Ford Rangers holds the No. 3 spot with a 1.80 ERA after allowing just five earned runs in 25 innings of action. He holds a 2-1 record, while teammate Chris Nelson is right behind with a 2.10 ERA. Like Celis, the MCV news anchor played in five games, pitching 21 innings and allowing just five earned runs and 21 hits wit a 1-1 win-loss card.
Mike Taitano of the Kings follows with a fifth-best 2.28 ERA, giving up just six earned runs in 24 innings.
Rounding up the top 10 are Byrone Kaipat of the Brewers (2.36), Camacho (2.82), Bobby Castro of the San Antonio Mets (3.60), and veteran Kaleb Dulei of the Freedom Air Masters (3.60).
In order for pitchers to qualify for the top 10 rankings, they must have seen action in 15 or more innings.
Meanwhile, none of the pitchers have matched Camacho in fanning hitters. The rising star is quickly making a name for himself and has sent a whopping 53 disappointed batters back to the dugout.
Camacho has seen action in 57 innings of 10 games and holds a 5-1 win-loss card.
McGregory Camacho is second in the strikeout list with 42 while Dulei follows Jones with 22. Nelson is also ranked among the top guns with 20 strikeouts.
