Saipan, Tinian, and Rota was once again strongly represented at this year’s Shimbashi Koichi Festival held in Tokyo, Japan.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the festival was held in the business district in front of the JR Shimbashi Station on July 21-22, 2005.

Held annually, the Shimbashi Koichi Festival is a community event for residents and visitors to the Shimbashi district. According to the festival’s Secretariat Office, this year saw over 100,000 people in attendance for the two-day event.

The Marianas’ participation consisted of stage performances, a travel booth and promotional activities. The Marianas also brought a cultural dance troupe to perform traditional dances and engage members of the audience during the festival. The MVA’s popular Saipanda doll and backpack promotional mascot goods were displayed at the booth, which attracted visitors.

Visitors to the booth were able to answer a destination quiz with a chance to win prizes. A Saipan Holiday Package was also up for grabs as the coveted prize for the Yukata Beauty Contest; numerous young beauties adorning traditional summer kimonos were in no short supply.

MVA board directors Mr. Sato and Mr. Matsumura, Mr. Yoshii from Tasi Tours, Mr. Katayama from Pacific Micronesia Tours, and the INATUAS Dance Group participated in the festival. (PR)
