Delay reels in more boats for SFA this weekend
The weather-related delay that postponed the 21st Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament for two weeks has actually proven fruitful for the Saipan Fisherman’s Association as the extra time allowed for more boats to register as of last night that were scheduled for the original cast-off.
The official pre-registration for the longest-running local event saw a total of 90 boats and crews register at the Smiling Cove Marina, where SFA officials and volunteers were on hand last night to go over the rules and regulation of the tournament until the sun went down.
“There’s something about this type of event that really attracts the anglers because we are really sincere in the way we organize the event for them—and we’re all friends. That’s the good thing about it,” said SFA president Juan San Nicolas.
As the sun dipped beneath the horizon, as some of the region’s sages of the sea convened upon the docks swapping fish stories and their travels to Saipan for tournaments past.
The line-casters will finally get their chance to bag the big ones at 6am this morning, and have 12 hours to reel in as much as possible before returning to the shores by 6pm tonight. The hunt for Danny Agulto’s record 624.34-lb. marlin continues tomorrow in the big blue as the anglers have another 12-hour stretch to catch. The eight-year record is not the only one on the line, as anglers have been eyeing James Taitano’s record-setting 106-lb. yellowfin for the better part of the last 15 years
