Just because the Ford Rangers defeated the Northern Yankees to win the championships of the Saipan Major League doesn’t mean that local hardballers will have to go without the sport for the next few months, but some of them will have to go a bit further for their favorite pastime.

The SML Masters League will not be the only brand of ball that kicks off next weekend at the Kan-Pacific Baseball Field in Marpi, as the SML Fall League will have the same opening day in the same venue.

According to league coordinator Tony Rogolifoi, the SML Fall League currently has teams representing the Pirates, Hustlers, San Roque D-9ers, Tanapag, and possibly an all-star team made up of the top Big and Senior Leaguers from the Saipan Little League Baseball Association.

While Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field receives a much needed face lift for the 2006 Micronesian Games, the SML Fall League will hold all of its games at the Kan-Pacific baseball diamond in Marpi. All of the games will be held during the mornings on the weekends as the facility lacks the necessary lights for evening contests.

With a tentative opening day slated for Saturday, Sept. 24, 2pm, the league’s regular season format will most likely be a three round robin, with eligible players between the ages of 16-25.

The team registration fee is $1,200, and the next meeting for anyone interested in participating at any level is next Monday, Sept. 19, at 6pm at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. To register for the SML Masters League or the SML Fall League, contact league coordinator Tony Rogolifoi at the Oleai Sports Complex by calling 664-2508.
