At least 12 private schools have agreed to join a dozen more schools from the public sector in this year’s Parade of Books slated next month.

Public School System federal programs advisor Tim Thornburgh said the PSS met with principals and representatives of the concerned private school Tuesday afternoon at the Board of Education conference room in Capitol Hill.

Thornburgh said the program would be beneficial to the school children of the CNMI. “The program is a nice way to promote reading in the CNMI,” he said.

The Saipan Rotary Club “Rotary’s Parade of Books” would give students a chance to select their favorite books and dress up as their favorite characters in those books. The students will then come up the stage of the American Memorial Park Amphitheater and parade with their costumes and props.

Students will be given time to present to the audience the books and characters that they have chosen and the reason for the costumes.

The parade will be held on Nov. 19 from 4pm to 7pm and will fall on a Saturday. Thornburgh said the event day would also fall on a reading program day for the public schools.

The reading program will be from morning to afternoon. He said Education Commissioner Rita H. Inos already agreed to provide catered dinner meals for the children participating in the event.

“A generous gesture from the commissioner,” said Thornburgh.

The event is open to students from kindergarten to 8th grade. Prizes at stake are $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third place. Participating schools will receive $100 in cash prizes each.

Rotary officials said schools participating would have the opportunity to receive cash prizes to purchase supplies to enhance their respective literacy programs.
