Rota ports manager Benjamin M. Manglona will retire effective Dec. 9 after almost 18 years with the Commonwealth Ports Authority.

Manglona plans to join his wife and five children in Texas. He may also try his luck in business or work in the private sector.

In a telephone interview, Manglona said he has mixed feelings about his retirement.

ÅgI spent most of my life at CPA. But I also want to pursue other opportunities and give a chance to other people. Of course, I don’t want to miss the retirement benefits available,Åh he said. ÅgMy family has been anxiously waiting for my retirement. I would like to spend more time with them.Åh

Manglona joined CPA in 1988 as an intern at the Rota ports office. He later transferred to CPA’s main office in Saipan, where he got training in different aspects of airport and seaport management and operations.

He returned to Rota in 1992 to serve as assistant ports manager. In 1997, he was promoted to the position of manager for the Rota International Airport and the Rota West Harbor.

CPA executive director Carlos Salas said Manglona has contributed a lot to the ports authority.

ÅgHe’s been a great manager. We’re sorry he has to go. But it’s a decision he has made and there’s nothing we can do. We understand that he has to do his personal thing too. Hopefully, we can find a qualified replacement for him,Åh Salas said.

Salas himself is reportedly planning on retiring next month. However, he said yesterday that he has not made a final decision yet.

Salas served CPA as a comptroller before he became the authority’s executive director. Earlier this year, he became the recipient of the first-ever ÅgHerman C. Bliss Airport PartnershipÅh Award for his support of projects by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.
