In an eating showdown that combined courage and indigestion, Steven Harmsen emerged last Saturday as the 2008 Taste of the Marianas hot dog eating champion, knocking out 2007 winner Rob Epley.

Hundreds of thrilled spectators were crammed in front of the stage near the American Memorial Park Bell Tower to watch the competition.

Twenty-three competitors consisting of men, women, children and tourists appeared to be on adrenaline rush until Harmsen jumped to an early lead in the competition, sometimes jamming franks into his mouth with two hands as the crowd roared.

He won by being the first to finish off all four hot dogs and buns; Epley came close after a few minutes.

Michaelangelo Aveina also showed off his eating skills by finishing third.

Harmsen, the new Saipan eating machine, went home 100$ richer while Epley received $75 and Aveina got $50.

The sponsors for the event were Marianas Visitors Authority, Triple J Wholesale, and Herman’s Modern Bakery.

The much-awaited 2008 Annual Chefs Competition will be held tomorrow at 7:30pm at the Taste of the Marianas International Food Festival and Beer Garden.

Another set of performers will take center stage at the American Memorial Park from 6pm to 10pm, including The Talaabwog Women Stick Dancers, Guam’s Bigger & Better band, Refaluwash Warriors and the Penina Ole Vasa.
