Gov. Benigno R. Fitial said he will seek re-election next year if he feels that the people in the CNMI will still their support him.

“If the people still need me, I am here for them,” said Fitial in an interview with the media shortly after the completion of the Liberation Day Parade on Friday.

On reports that Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez had already informed the Covenant Party that he has given no commitment to being Fitial’s running mate again, the governor said he respects people’s decision.

When told about Villagomez’s statement about being “non-committal,” Fitial replied: “Well, then he has to reckon with the party, not with me.”

The governor refused to answer questions as to who will be his likely running mate if Villagomez decides not to run as the Covenant Party’s bet for lieutenant governor in the 2009 elections.

Reports had it that the lieutenant governor has rejoined the Republican Party and will team up with former Lt. Gov. Diego Benavente in the coming elections.
