The African-American Cultural Preservation Committee on Saipan announced this week that it is now ready to accept interested students who want to join the upcoming Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Essay and Elocution Contest 2009.

For the third time on Jan. 19, the AACPC will commemorate MLK Day since Gov. Benigno R. Fitial signed a bill enacting MLK Jr. Day as an official CNMI holiday.

Next year’s theme would be “What Would Martin Say?” in obvious reference to the recent victory of America’s first black President, Barrack Obama.

For more information, interested students who may wish to join may contact the following: Samuel Joyner, Ambrose Bennett (Kagman Elementary School); Walt Goodridge, Hilda Joyner (Chacha Oceanview Junior High) or you may send a message to mlikcontest@welovesaipan.com.

Goodridge said he expect 20 to 30 entrants across all grade levels, just like in the past two years.

Contestants must give their ideas on what civil rights leader Martin Luther King would say about Obama’s victory.

“What would he say to the American people, to the world, to president Obama himself?”

The essay must be relevant to the theme, double-spaced, typed, 12 font size, in legible writing, and must include the student’s name, school, grade, grade level, teacher’s name and principal’s name.

Each school is allowed to submit three entries per grade level category:

-3rd to 5th, 150-250 words

-6th to 8th, 250-350 words

-9th to 12th, 350-500 words

One winner will be selected for each grade level, with the three overall winners to get $100 each.

Also during the January celebration, the Freedom Fighter Award will be handed out, honoring youth as well as adults, to be presented at the American Memorial Park.

The deadline for submission of entries is on Dec. 15.
