CPA, Beach Boys remain unbeaten
The Beach Boys and Commonwealth Ports Authority remained undefeated in the Budweiser 2008 Inter-Government/Business Softball League after downing separate foes last week at the Capital Hill Ballfield.
The Beach Boys collided with the Mayor’s Office Thursday night and cruised to a 19-3 win to improve their record to 3-0.
The victory kept the Beach Boys in the No. 1 spot tying Freedom Air, Legislature, Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, and CPA.
The Beach Boys broke the game wide open with a 12-run top of the fourth, scoring one run after another.
The Beach Boys’ breakaway was highlighted by first baseman B.J. Sablan’s two-run homer. Sablan went 3-for-3 at bat and had three RBIs.
Three Beach Boys sluggers went 2-or-3 at-bat and the team recorded a batting average of .444 after going 16-for-36.
The Mayor’s Office scored only at the bottom of the first inning, making two runs off the Beach Boys’ errors and one run off a John Guerrero single.
The Mayor’s Office dropped to a 0-3 record and shares the bottom of the team standings with PIC and Hopwood.
CPA joined four other squads at the top after outclassing No Zone, 11-8, Friday.
After giving up three runs in the first inning, CPA’s defense shut out No Zone in the next three to take a 9-3 lead.
No Zone tried to recover, but made only five runs in the fifth and sixth and a double play at the bottom of the seventh ended its chances to extend the game.
CPA added two more runs in the fifth, but failed to score in the last two innings for an 11-8 lead, entering the bottom of the seventh.
Second baseman Gary Cruz led off for No Zone and singled, but was later beaten to second base.
CPA relief pitcher Donald Pangelinan walked second batter Ned Norita. Bruce Norita was the third batter and hit the ball toward the centerfield. But outfielder Julian Matsutaro caught the fly ball, then quickly threw it to second baseman Manny Degracia, who tagged Ned Norita out for the double play.

DLNR 6, CHC 5
The Department of Land and Natural Resources capitalized on Commonwealth Health Center’s errors at the top of the seventh inning to pull off a 6-5 victory.
DNLR was behind, 3-5, after six complete innings, when CHC began having miscues at the top of the seventh allowing the former to score three runs.
DLNR preserved the win when CHC’s first batter flied out, the second was beaten to second base and the fifth flied out to rightfield.
The win improved DLNR’s record to 2-1, while CHC dropped to a 1-2 slate.

Custom 8, SaipanCell 7
Customs broke into the win column after three games edging SaipanCell, 8-7.
Like in the DLNR-CHC tiff, Customs took advantage of SaipanCell’s erratic defensive plays in the end to eke out a victory.
Customs scored its last three runs in the game on SaipanCell’s errors taking an 8-4 lead, going into the top of the seventh inning.
SaipanCell must score at least four runs to extend the game, but made only three to hand the victory to Customs.
Customs secured the win when John Acosto flied out to centerfield.
SaipanCell absorbed its second loss in a row after three games.
WOMEN’SCHC 9, CUC 8
In the lone women’s game Friday night, CHC recovered from its debut loss with a close 9-8 win over CUC.
Shortstop Mercy Santos led CHC with her 3-for-3 at-bat. She scored two runs, a single and two RBIs.
A five-run bottom of the third put CHC in the lead, 6-2, and although CUC made repeated comeback bids, a three-run top of the sixth was enough for the former to preserve the victory.
