Wabol pulls off hat trick over weekend
As if winning the 4th Annual NMC Foundation Open on Saturday wasn’t good enough, veteran ball striker Jess Wabol also topped the two 6th Micronesian Games qualifiers held over the weekend, thus improving his chances of being named to the CNMI National Golf Team.
The former Oleai Elementary School principal first fired a two-under 70 last Saturday during the NMC fundraiser, which doubled as yet another Micro Games qualifier.
Teeing off from the white tee, Wabol bested the likes of Sasaki Oliver (73), Jeff Taylor (74), Joe “Kamikaze” Camacho (77), Tony Satur (77), Tony Benavente Jr. (82), Jack M. Sablan (83), John L. Babauta (87), Alex Aquiningoc (88), and Rex Palacios (90).
He then came back stronger in the Sunday Micro Games qualifier, carding a two-over 74 to beat a nine-player field that included Kamikaze Camacho (77), Oliver (77), Satur (81), Adam Hardwick (83), Richard Pierce (83), Clifford Camacho (88), Babauta (90), and Aquiningoc (101). Pierce won the low net after registering a 70. Players teed off from the longer blue tee Sunday.
In the women’s qualifiers, Noriko Togawa shot an 86 on Saturday and a 74 on Sunday. The only other lady duffer that played during both days was Shiori Onoue, who fired an 88 and an 85.
Emily Santos topped the Saturday qualifier after recording an 85. The other lady duffers that played Saturday were Lorraine Babauta (100) and youth golfer Leina Kim (88).
The rest of the April-May schedule for the Micro Games qualifiers are April 30 at the Kingfisher Golf Links and May 20 at Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort. Wabol has also set May 21 as a make-up day for golfers who missed a round.
Wabol is expected to pick five golfers for the men’s team and same number for the women’s team a month or two before the start of the Micro Games, which is set from June 23 to July 3 on Saipan.
