Tennis also completes roster
After intense action in the first half of the 25th Annual DFS Micronesian Tennis Championships during the weekend, CNMI National Tennis coach Jeff Race has finalized his roster for the upcoming 6th Micronesian Games.
In an interview yesterday, Race disclosed that as reported, Todd Montgomery and Tim Quan will join him on the men’s team. He said the 18-and-under finals victory by Ji Hoon Heo also secured his slot as the No. 4 singles player on the team.
“Ji Hoon has been playing great tennis lately and he has earned a spot on the team,” Race said.
Heo was able to defeat fellow junior netter Ralph Buenaventura in three sets 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 to ensure his participation in the Games. Buenaventura is also on the team, serving as an alternate. Fellow standout Nicolas Son will also serve as a second alternate.
“We’re keeping them on as alternates because you may never what’s going to happen,” Race said. “Someone might get hurt or might not be able to play.”
Race said the men’s doubles scene has yet to be finalized.
“It may be me teaming up with Tim, or Todd and Tim. That’s what has yet to be decided,” he said, citing that who ever doesn’t pair up with Quan will serve as the teammate of Heo.
Meanwhile, Race disclosed that Kana Aikawa, Mayuko Arriola, Lila Mailman, Audrey Motto, and Vivian Lee will serve as the CNMI hopes in the women’s corner.
Aikawa, Arriola, Mailman, and Lee will see action in the singles competition, while Motto will be competing in the doubles scene.
He added that the CNMI pairs to the mix doubles competition will feature he and Aikawa, Montgomery and Arriola, Quan and Mailman, and Heo and Motto playing together.
Of all mentioned, eight members—Race, Heo, Buenaventura, Son, Mailman, Arriola, Lee, and Motto—competed in the past weekend’s DFS tournament.
“I’m happy with the way everyone played, I just wished Todd was here…he was off island and Tim was not able to make it here on time, and Kana won’t be here until June 1,” he said.
The Micro Games will be held from June 23 to July 2, with tennis to be played at the PIC courts and the Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort tennis courts.
