NMC to hold summer workshops

Two instructors from Hawaii will be teaching American sign language at the Northern Marianas College this summer, NMC announced Friday.

University of Hawaii-Manoa associate professor Jan Fried and Kapi’olani Community College instructor Roy Balantac will conduct a free workshop on American sign language from May 30 to 31 and June 2, 2006. The workshop will be held from 6pm to 8pm in Building D at the NMC As Terlaje campus.

Fried and Balantac will also be presenting at the Garapan Street Market on Thursday, June 1, 2006.

Those interested in learning more about American sign language and receiving credit for it may also enroll in NMC summer session class entitled SL101-01, or Introduction to Sign Language.

The summer class will run from June 5 through July 14, Monday through Friday, 3pm to 4:55 pm. Balantac will be the instructor.

In related news, the NMC Small Business Development Center and the Commonwealth Development Authority will sponsor a series of business workshops in June in celebration of the 9th Annual Small Business Month.

Ken Shankweiler will speak on the “Essential Skills of Leadership” on Monday, June 5. He will also lead a workshop on “Delegating” on Wednesday, June 7.

For his part, Rik Villegas will conduct a workshop on “Resolving Conflicts” on Tuesday, June 27. He will discuss “Managing Complaints” in another workshop on Wednesday, June 28.

All workshops will be held from 9am to 12nn at the college’s SBDC conference room. Registration time for workshops is 8:30am to 9am.
