RHT routs UFO, grabs solo lead
RHT took over the helm of the 2006 MDX Good Sportsmanship Basketball League Coca-Cola Cup standings after routing winless UFO-Apollo’s, 116-80, Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The win momentarily allowed the now 4-1 team to take solo possession of the league standings pending the results of the Budweiser-Kinpachi and SIP-SMF tussles last night, which scores were still not available as of press time.
The Mutt-and-Jeff combination of Andres “Jhun” Estolas Jr. and Jawn Joyner got the ball rolling for RHT, as the duo scored eight and seven points, respectively, to help their team open up a 30-16 spread after the first quarter.
Brothers Errol Peredo and Badong Camacho then took over the scoring reins in the second, combining for 13 points as the Marvin Deocares-coached team expanded its lead, 52-36, at the half.
It was a total team effort for RHT in the third with six players getting into the scoring act, as the team continued to toy with a visibly overmatched UFO and was in total control, leading, 77-52, heading into the fourth and final quarter.
Veteran forward Giovanni Pardinan tried to rally UFO back into the game in the payoff period by exploding for 10 points, but his effort was too little, too late, as Estolas added to their opponents’ misery hitting five 3-pointers en route to scoring 15 in the fourth to cap the 36-point win.
Estolas led all scorers with 23, followed by Peredo and Joyner with 14 and 12 markers, respectively. Joyner added four boards, four blocks, and a couple of steals to take home game MVP honors.
Youngster Kovin Ogumoro shone for UFO in the loss with 19 points, while Malasarte was once again a terror inside with 14 points and 11 rebounds to the now 0-5 squad.
Mover players didn’t have to expend energy in their win against NYBA as they improved to 3-2 with a walkover victory. NYBA dropped to 1-4 with the forfeit.
