GUAM—Katherine Calvo Sgro, executive vice president and chairman of the board for Payless Markets Inc., was named on May 6, 2006, as the winner of the first First Hawaiian Bank and Guam Business Businesswoman of the Year award.

Proceeds from the gala were donated to the University of Guam to sponsor scholarship programs to encourage students to become successful businesspeople and contribute to Guam’s society. The two scholarship recipients will be announced and presented with the scholarships today at 3pm.

Representatives from the sponsors, including Laura-Lynn V. Dacanay, vice president and country manager for First Hawaiian Bank; Maureen N. Maratita, publisher for Guam Business and Flora Baza Quan, executive director of the University of Guam Endowment Foundation reviewed applicants for the scholarships. Applicants for the Businesswoman of the Year scholarship program were judged on grades, involvement in the community and potential to become successful businesspeople.

First Hawaiian Bank and Guam Business have joined forces to launch the cooperative effort to provide recognition to businesswomen who have made a difference and “raised the bar” in the field in which they are involved. (PR)
