Abugan wins kids’ chess, Aflonso in expert finals
Mark Anthony Abugan won the children’s division of the Chess Knockout Open Tournament held last Saturday at the American Memorial Park.
Abugan kicked off his campaign with a 2-1 win over Adam Palacios then made it 2-for-2 with a 2-0 sweep of Brandon Villacrusis that immediately vaulted him into the championship game where he faced off against Adam Palacios.
Palacios, who lost the championship, got into the finals after beating Villacrusis, 2-0, and Daniel Ray Dandan with the same score. The only other result of the children’s tourney saw Villacrusis beat Dandan, 2-0.
Ronnie Alfonso, meanwhile, is in the finals of the advance group after beating fellow wood pusher Lou Piliwale, 2-1, in the semis.
Alfonso defeated Joseph Hallig, 2-0, in the first round and then barged into the semis with another 2-0 win over Feliciano David.
Jerry Biniahan is awaiting the winner of the match between Atty. Rey Yana and Manny Domingo, which will take place this coming Sunday, Oct. 29, 12:30pm at the AMP.
Like Alfonso, Biniahan also did quite well in the first two rounds, taking out Boni Dimaunahan, 2-0, in the opening round before nipping Roel Bince, 1.5-.5, in the second.
Yana, for his part, advanced to the second round with a 2-1 victory over Manuel Igrobay, while Domingo was a 2-0 winner over Igrobay.
Piliwale gave Abraham Cui all sorts of fits in the opening round and won 2-0 before advancing to the semis with a 2-0 victory over Mike Vargas.
Other results saw Feliciano David beat Eddie Cabalquinto, 2-0, and Vargas getting a bye in the first round.
The championship of the advance division will take place also at 2pm on Sunday at the AMP. The overall winner will take home $100, runner-up $50, and semifinalists $25. The tournament is also holding a consolation competition with the winner earning $20 and runner-up pocketing $10.
