With five months remaining before some of the best extreme athletes come to the CNMI for the XTERRA Saipan Championship, local racers will have a chance to practice their climbing skills this weekend during the Tough Love Mountain Bike Race.

The Northern Mariana Islands Triathlon Federation usually has people swimming, biking, and running around the island testing their mettle but this Saturday, Russ Quinn and company are heading in just one direction—up.

The layout for the course is simple, as racers will sprint away from the Micro Beach pavilion and head up Navy Hill. The race doesn’t end with the pavement as the riders will continue up the mountain along the corral roads at finish atop Mount Tapochau.

Registration takes place bright and early at 6:30am, and unlike many events on Saipan, the race will get started promptly, when organizers send riders on their way at 7am.

The cost to participate in the event is $10 for NMITF members or $15 for non-members and includes a commemorative T-shirt, drinks at the top, fruit, and the spectacular view from the top of Saipan.

Organizers will also be raffling off a number of prizes and are looking to hear from potential racers who have yet to notify them of their intention to participate.

For more information about the race or to volunteer your services, contact Quinn by calling 287-0318 or via email at saipanruss@yahoo.com.
