The 2006 MDX Good Sportsmanship Basketball League Coca-Cola Cup continued on Sunday, and defending champion Samahang Ilokano at Pangasinense was able to tie RHT for the best record.

SIP defeated UFO-Apollo’s with ease to close with a 6-1 record. RHT, however, earned the pennant crown after beating SIP in their head-to-head meeting earlier in the season.

Up against cellar dweller UFO, the SIP squad showed no mercy and cruised to a 126-85 victory.

The team had different players take the lead role in each of the periods.

In the first quarter, it was Fred Pelisamen who had the hot hand as the scoring machine broke loose for 12 points to spearhead a 26-15 push.

Fellow guard Elmer Esdrelon picked up where Pelisamen left off, and SIP was put in a comfortable position as the Fiesta Resort and Spa employee worked for 14 points. With Esdrelon on fire, SIP was able to increase the lead to 23 points, 60-37, at the break.

Guard Bing Marasigan then took over and swooshed six baskets for 12 points, and by the end of the third, SIP had secured the win with a gigantic 50-point advantage, 100-50.

The team then relaxed a bit and settled for the 41-point victory margin.

Pelisamen and Marasigan led SIP with 26 and 22 points, while George Barbo and Esdrelon finished with 19 and 18 points, with officials voting Esdrelon as player of the game. Brian Flores and J.R. Montano also had 11 and 10 points.

Bong Malasarte led UFO with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Martin Moreno and Jerry Lopez contributed 17 and 14 points.

Earlier, MOVER was able to break the three-way tie for the best record in the league after upsetting Budweiser, 96-83.

The loss drops Budweiser’s record to 5-2, while the win by MOVER improved the team to 4-3.

MOVER leaned on towers Delwyn Cortez and Eric Dalangin, as well as on Ryan Sanciangco to pull off the win.

Dalangin and Sanciangco combined for 19 points in the opening period, matching the entire production of Budweiser. The other MOVER cagers also combined to add 12 points, giving the team a 31-19 edge.

Budweiser struggled in the second and managed to put up just 11 points. With that, MOVER was able to burst ahead and increase its lead to 21 points, 51-30, at halftime.

MOVER then turned to Cortez, and the center did not disappoint as he hit all five free throw attempts and punched in a couple of baskets. The team also outscored Budweiser, 23-21, to pad its lead, 74-51.

Taj Van Buren tried to lead Budweiser back, nailing three triples and scoring 11 points in the final minutes, but the deficit was just too large. Sanciangco, Chris Domingo, Cortez, and Dalangin also punched in baskets for MOVER to prevent a collapse.

Sanciangco and Dalangin finished with 23 points apiece, with Dalangin earning player of the game honors. Cortez and Domingo also supported with 20 and 14 points for MOVER.

Van Buren led Budweiser with 24 points, while Sonny Lerio added 12 points. James Abuy and Marlon De Dios also had 10 points apiece.
