NMIFA women return to action
For weeks, the women of the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association have thrilled spectators with their competitive spirit, sportsmanship, and back and forth action on the local soccer pitches.
Whether at the American Memorial Park or on the Garapan Elementary School field, the local ladies have ushered in the first sanctioned adult soccer to Saipan and plan to do the same for Tinian and Rota.
Last weekend they put their schedule aside to make way for the youth leagues by serving as coaches, referees, assistant referees, and proud parents to the next generation of Marianas kickers.
They’ll strap on the cleats and shin guards this weekend when play resumes on Saturday morning, and with only one game remaining for each of the teams in the regular season, the playoff picture is coming into focus.
The Mamma Mia’s are locked in at third place and the Eye Ballers are cemented in the cellar, but Hot Salsa is a loss and a Femme Fatales win away from falling out of the top spot.
While they were he first to offer sanctioned soccer, the women aren’t the only adults who will play with NMIFA as a men’s league is in the works. For more information about either playing or refereeing in the upcoming men’s league, contact Vince Stravino via email at vincestravino@yahoo.com.
