Sakovich checks in about MCOC debt
Local athletic associations aren’t the only ones trying to determine the progress of the Micronesian Games Organizing Committee’s final report for the 6th Micronesian Games, as one of the main organizers appears to be out of a two-person loop between MCOC board chairman Rex Palacios and DCCA secretary Daisy Villagomez-Bier.
Longtime CNMI resident Bill Sakovich was courted from his home in Hilo, Hawaii to be the Executive Director of the Games, and while he oversaw to the day-to-day operations of the regional event, he hasn’t heard much from Saipan since leaving in July.
“I have no clue. I was told bills had not been paid, and although I have written to Rex (Palacios) and Daisy (Villagomez-Bier), I have not had any responses,” he said.
Sakovich said that he hopes to hear something about the report soon and that a couple of committee members have written to him saying that while they were equally uniformed about the report but that they were told it was supposed to be coming.
As of press time, Palacios and Villagomez-Bier have not yet replied to emails sent to them and MCOC members Monday evening from this reporter regarding the status of the report, though more than four months have passed since the close of the Games.
During the most recent meeting of the Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association one local sporting organization disclosed that it had to settle an outstanding balance from the Games that it felt was the MCOC’s responsibility.
According to Northern Marianas Athletics secretary general Robin Sapong, his organization recently paid out $1,500 to a local vendor for the use of sound equipment that was used at the Oleai Sports Complex track and field facility during the Games.
Even NMASA president Mike White said that he still hasn’t heard anything regarding the progress of the MCOC’s official report which Palacios previously said would be furnished no later than a month following the Games.
