The cash-strapped CNMI Public School System seems to be catching up with the other Education System across the nation.

This was learned by PSS Commissioner of Education David M. Borja during the weeklong U.S. Department of Education sponsored Data Conference in Washington, D.C. He said he learned that the CNMI’s education system is similar to the cases of the State of California and State of New York two years ago.

Borja added that the CNMI presented to the federal government a summary of the student and teachers data reports from 1998 to 2006. In this regard, it was concluded that the status of the CNMI is the same with the two other states some two years back.

Education leaders across the nation attended the conference. Borja said the conference reaffirmed the importance of data on decision-making for the benefit of the school community in the US.

He said principals also attended the conference, reporting the status of each school’s SAT 10 compliance. Borja presented the data regarding SAT 10 results comparing test results with students being taught by “Highly Qualified Teachers” versus non-HQT.

Borja said the conference also paved way for the CNMI representatives to discuss the direction for the Commonwealth Education System.

He said there were three different areas that they tackled during the conference. First is the Student Management Data System, where the PSS has adopted a web-based technology for reporting of student information and teacher data, called Pacific Education Data Management System Web Database.

Borja endorsed the PEDMS and its use for state annual reporting of the SAT 10, Standard Based Assessment, PSS Report Card and the NCES Report. “The PEDMS system is the only software tool that manipulates, as well as generates the results of the SBA Assessment Student Achievement data,” said Borja.

The CNMI also presented to the U.S. DOE the current Standards and Benchmarks being implemented by the PSS. Borja also reported to the US DOE the current status of the Praxis certification of the local teachers.

Borja added that the CNMI was very well received during the conference last week.
