Acting Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez has nominated Lino S. Tenorio to fill the position of Secretary of the Department of Corrections.

Villagomez’s nomination was made on Nov. 20, in a letter to Senate President Joseph M. Mendiola. The acting governor also announced the appointment during Monday’s weekly Cabinet meeting.

Tenorio will assume the responsibility previously given to Ramon Cing Mafnas, who previously served in an acting capacity for both the Department of Corrections and the Department of Public Safety.

Mafnas will resume his responsibilities as the governor’s senior policy advisor and focus primarily on assisting Tenorio in meeting the obligations outlined in a federal consent decree for the new corrections facility.

In his letter to Senate President Mendiola, Villagomez said: “The governor and I are confident that Mr. Tenorio is qualified to fulfill the vital responsibilities of this office and will be an asset to our administration.”

Tenorio, 44, previously served as the deputy commissioner of operations for the Department of Public Safety from 1994 to 1998. He rose through the ranks as a career law enforcement professional, going from police officer I to III, and from there rising from the rank of police sergeant to police lieutenant and police captain, before becoming deputy commissioner of operations.

Tenorio attended numerous professional development conferences and law enforcement training sessions throughout his career. He is also a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, having served in the U.S. Army. [B][I](PR)
