A cashier of the Tinian Health Center’s accounting section allegedly stole the hospital’s collection in the total amount of $6,926.40.

Renada Maelyn SN Palacios, 26, was arrested Monday night on charges of theft and theft by unlawful taking.

During a hearing yesterday, Superior Court associate judge Ramona V. Manglona imposed a $2,000 cash bail for the defendant’s temporary release.

Manglona set the preliminary hearing for Dec. 6.

According to Tinian police, Palacios did not deposit to Finance Office the Health Center’s collection for eight days last October in the amount of $4,871.17 and for three days this month in the amount of $2,055.23.

Tinian Health Center director Rita Manglona sought help from the police last Nov. 16 after receiving from their accountant an incident report about deposit discrepancies.

The accountant apparently discovered the discrepancies in their daily cash collection from October to Nov. 8 when Finance’s cashier reported that the daily deposit for Tinian Health Center has been delinquent.

The accountant remembered that on Nov. 6 she asked Palacios for the complete collection report for October.

Palacios told the accountant that she was going to deposit the collection once she finishes closing the Nov. 1 collection.

On Nov. 7, the accountant asked Palacios for the October collection file again, but the defendant stated that it is not complete yet because she was not able to make the deposit due to difficulty in balancing the report.

That day Palacios made a deposit at Finance. When she returned to the hospital she was crying, the accountant said. The cashier reportedly stated that her mother is sick and that she needs someone to help her purchase an airline ticket.

That same day, Palacios failed to return to the office after she went home for lunch, the accountant said.
