After watching the men round the bases for two weeks the Inter-Government Women’s Slow-Pitch Softball League got underway with the first triple-header of the season Tuesday night at the Miguel “Tan Ge” Basa Field.

Pitcher Mary Ann Yamada went the distance for the Governor’s Office thanks to solid defense and a boatload of offense from the Executive Branch sluggers in their opening 13-3 win over the Commonwealth Health Center/PHI women.

Nadia Saralu was perfect at the plate through three attempts and was a homerun away from hitting for the cycle as the shortstop drove in a run for the Governor’s Office while outfielder Janice Camacho went 3-for-4 with a string of singles and a run batted in.

First baseman Antonette Laniyo went 2-for-4 on the night and drove in three ribbies including the game winner that drove in catcher Sheena Sablan in the bottom of the sixth inning.

When Sablan crossed the plate, umpires cut the game short by giving an austerity inning courtesy of the league’s 10-run mercy rule.

The bean counters got the best of the power brokers on Tuesday night as the Department of Finance pulled the plug on the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. with a one-sided 16-3 contest at Tan Ge.

Pitchers don’t usually make a huge difference in the hitter friendly mountain ball format but Finance’s Bego Camacho gave up just eight hits and struck out a half-dozen would-be hitters.

Her teammates played tough and relied on their angels in the outfield to provide power at the plate as left fielder Bert Camacho went 3-for-4 with a pair of lead-off home runs in the first and third innings and four runs batted in, while centerfielder Liz Lebria went 2-for-5 with a single and an inside the park home run.

The Public School System was well prepared for their first night of ball at the Oleai Sports Complex and their dedication and punctuality paid off when the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs failed to field a team of sluggers at game time.

It’s possible that the DCCA was intimidated by the powerful PSS squad led by pitcher Remy Celis and top notch all-stars like Connie Camacho, Pauline Tudela, Emy Quitugua, Beverly Ngirmekur, Felisa Brel, and Vanessa Mobel.
