Even the steel sculpture decorations that have been erected for the Christmas season are not being spared by the copper wire thieves.

Department of Public Safety acting spokesman Sgt. Thomas A. Blas Jr. said yesterday that the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. reported to DPS over the weekend about the copper wire theft incidents.

Blas said CUC complained that several of the lighted steel sculptures they had erected for the holiday season had been vandalized.

The suspects stole the electrical wires and switch boxes that connected the steel sculptures to the power poles.

A couple of sculptures were in fact stolen from their locations—in front of Bank of Saipan on Beach Road in Chalan Kanoa and in front of Bharti’s Store, also in Chalan Kanoa, Blas said.

Blas said the stolen power lines and switch boxes for the sculptures were those at the 13 Fishermen’s Monument, Kagman 1 and II intersection, and Beach Road-Chalan Piao near Hopwood Junior High School.

Last week, acting Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez expressed anger over the continued stealing of copper wires in the CNMI.

Villagomez said the theft of copper wires has reached chronic proportion and that it has to be stopped. [I][B](Ferdie de la Torre)
