A significant number of motorists on Saipan are using seatbelts, according to a survey conducted by the Department of Public Safety.

Two surveys conducted by DPS Traffic and Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program on April 1 showed that of the 1,542 vehicles they inspected, 1,327 drivers were found using seatbelts while only 215 were not.

This means that 86 percent of those inspected were using seatbelts, while 14 percent were not.

In his report, police officer Glenn S. Rabago said the first survey was conducted between 9am to 10am, while the second was between 2pm to 3pm.

In the first survey, Rabago said that, of 680 vehicles, 581 or 85 percent were using restraints, while 99 or 15 percent were not.

In the second survey, the officer said, of the 862 vehicles, 746 or 87 percent wore restraints, while 116 or 13 percent had none.

On the other hand, DPS Traffic Section’s two checkpoints last Friday found no one driving under the influence of alcohol.

In his report, police officer 2 Daniel L. Smith said the first checkpoint was held from 10am to 11:15am along Beach Road near Minachom Atdao in Susupe.

Smith said the second checkpoint was between 3pm to 4:15pm along Middle Road near the Army Reserve Center.

Smith said that 160 vehicles were stopped and screened, a total of 23 were given regular citations, while 12 were issued insurance citations.

Smith said 19 failed to display front license plates.
