Red Cross Walkathon raises 46K
The American Red Cross-NMI Chapter’s 22nd Red Cross Walkathon exceeded its targets this year, drawing at least 2,000 participants and raising $46,000.
According to Red Cross NMI Chapter executive director John Hirsch, “We’re very pleased with the outcome. We made enough to continue with various upcoming community projects and to even keep the chapter open.”
This year, the goal of the Red Cross Walkathon was to raise at least $35,000. Instead, they garnered over $10,000 more than that.
Despite the tight economic condition this year, the community still managed to turn out and give its annual support to the cause, Hirsh said. “We are very grateful and humbled by the community.”
Hirsch said that about 125 lucky individuals will each get a one-gigabyte MP3 player after raising at least $75 on their pledge forms. At least three will each receive Nintendo Wii or brand new digital cameras.
Other prizes included cell phones, water park passes, banana boat rides and gift certificates from various sponsors.
All participants at this year’s walkathon received a free Red Cross walkathon t-shirt.
The walkathon was held simultaneously on all three main islands of Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
Hirsh said the money raised this year would be used to support the group’s operations such as outreach programs and training in preparation for disasters and other workshops.
The ARC NMI Chapter thanked this year’s walkathon premier sponsors: Coca Cola, Subway, Foremost, Glimpses and others for providing free drinks and other freebies for the walkers.
