CNMI District Administrator James Ada said three new teams will be added in this year’s Asia-Pacific Little League Regional Tournament, which takes place from July 18 to 25 in Hong Kong Disneyland.

Ada said Singapore, Australia, and India will be added to the nine other teams in the Asia and Pacific pools, hiking the number of competing countries in the Asia-Pacific pool to 12.

Singapore and Australia will join the CNMI, Guam, Indonesia, New Zealand, and the Philippines in the Pacific pool, while India will be the new addition in the Asia division joining powerhouse Taiwan and Korea, and Hong Kong and Thailand.

The addition of the three new teams prompted Little League organizers to move one week later the scheduled opening of the Asia-Pacific Regional Tournament. The tournament was scheduled to open on July 11 but was moved to July 18.

Ada said the tournament format will remain the same with each pool playing a single round robin. The tournament semifinals will slightly change with the addition of the three new teams.

Ada said they are proposing that the top two teams in each pool advance to the crossover semifinal phase with the winners moving on to the Asia-Pacific Regional finals.

The winner of the Asia-Pacific finals will represent the division moving on to the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

“We still need to vote on accepting the three new teams. But that merely is a formality since Singapore, Australia, and India are basically in. They will be competing in the Asia-Pacific tournament in July in Hong Kong.

In other news, Ada said the Rota Junior and Senior League programs will open its 2008 season on May 3.

Ada added Rota will also host the CNMI District Tournament in the Majors, Junior, and Senior league divisions from June 5 to 8.
