Bar association gives $7.4K to MLSC
Micronesian Legal Services Corp. received yesterday its first contribution ever from the NMI Bar Association in the amount of $7,400.
In January 2007, the NMI Bar Association adopted an amendment to its bylaws to help provide support for legal representation of poor people in the CNMI. A portion of each member’s annual membership dues is earmarked as a contribution to MLSC.
“Poor people often need legal services, and have more contact with the legal system than the ordinary middle class person,” said Jane Mack, directing attorney for the Marianas Office of MLSC. “Indigents need representation in civil cases from adoption to probate, from divorce to debts they owe,” she said.
MLSC is a private, non-profit corporation that provides free legal aid to indigents in civil cases. Mack expressed thanks to the NMI Bar Association from MLSC for itself and on behalf of all of the clients they serve.
Maya Kara, president of the NMI Bar Association said, “I have the highest regard for attorneys who dedicate themselves to assisting indigent clients. It is my privilege to be president of a Bar Association that has stepped up to the plate to support legal services for those who cannot otherwise afford it. Equality under the law is meaningless unless you have access to representation. I am grateful to the members of the Bar Association for supporting this policy.” (PR)
